On Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 1324 hours members of the Mantua Township Fire District and Harrison Township Fire District were dispatched to Route 55 in the area of mile marker 52.6 northbound for a motor vehicle crash with reported people trapped. Squad Company 2211 responded immediately with a crew of four personnel, and arrived first due in the northbound lanes to find a two car motor vehicle crash with both vehicles overturned.
Squad 2211’s crew assessed the scene and found that the subjects in an overturned vehicle in the median had self extricated and that the occupants of an overturned vehicle in the northbound shoulder were still trapped. Crews stabilized the vehicle and removed the driver’s side of the vehicle to free the two trapped occupants. Once the patients were extricated they were turned over to Gloucester County EMS for transport to Cooper Trauma Center. Crews from District 23 were tasked with performing highway hazard control and confinement, until released from the scene by New Jersey State Police.
