On Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 0403 hours members of the Mantua Township Fire District were dispatched to the Mantua Township Public Works Yard for a Commercial Vehicle Fire. Chief 2201 arrived on scene and reported five (5) trash trucks on fire with multiple explosions from exposed flammable liquids. The fire was rapidly exposing to other vehicles and a 1000 gallon fuel tank.
Squad Company 2211 responded immediately with a crew of three personnel, and were ordered to drop a supply line from 401 Main Street to the scene. Squad laid 700 feet of 5″ hose and initially attacked the active fire with a 2 1/2″ hand line and a deluge gun. Squad Company 1311 was requested and arrived as the second due company. Squad 1311 also stretched a 2 1/2″ hand line to attack the active fire.
Command requested Engine 1022 for foam, Engines 511 and 2811 for manpower. The bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down; however, the damage was so excessive and there were pockets of fire contained in inaccessible areas. Crews utilized foam to fight flammable liquid fires and were able to contain the fire form extending to anything that was not initially on fire upon arrival.
Once the fire was brought under control, crews were now tasked with mitigating hazardous materials spills in the area and controlling runoff from the large amount of liquids exposed. Gloucester County HAZMAT and Fire Marshal’s Office were requested as well as the State DEP. Once all hazards were mitigated the scene was turned over to Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s Office and Prosecutor’s Office for investigation. The fire remains under investigation at this time, there were no injuries reported.
