On Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 1128 hours members of the Mantua Township Fire District were dispatched to 239 Shadow Place for a reported dwelling fire. Captain 2203 responded immediately, confirmed a header while en route, and requested the all hands. Upon his arrival, he found a 2 1/2 story single family dwelling with fire showing from the first and second floor on Division A. Squad Company 2211 responded within seconds of the dispatch and were ordered by command to lay in and go into service with an 1 3/4″ hand line upon arrival.
Engine Companies 2212, 2611 and 1033 along with Ladder Companies 516 and 2816 responded and were tasked with search, deploying a second hand line, as well as, ventilation. Squad Company 2211 operated three hand lines to battle the fire, and primary searches revealed a dog and two cats, which were rescued and rushed to Pitman Animal Hospital, where they are in stable condition at this time. A second dog was found deceased in the residence. The residence was an old balloon frame construction, which allowed the fire to run from the porch to the attic; however, aggressive interior attack stopped the fire spread from moving past the front bedroom. The fire was brought under control within thirty minutes and crews remained on scene for approximately 2 hours checking for extension and overhaul.
At that time, the scene was turned over to Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s Office and currently remains under investigation. At the completion of the investigation, the scene was turned back over to the homeowner to be secured. No further action taken.
