On Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 0702 hours members of the Mantua Township Fire District and Pitman Fire Company No. 1 were dispatched to 775 Main Street for a reported Structure Fire. Squad Company 2211 and FM 22 responded immediately and were advised by Gloucester County Communications that they were receiving numerous calls reporting a 12 unit storage facility with three units involved.
FM 22 arrived on scene and confirmed the report, with smoke showing advising Squad Company 2211 to go into service. Chief 2201 arrived and assumed command while Squad Company 2211 was obtaining a water supply from Main Street and New Street. Squad Company 2211 laid into the scene and stretched a single 1 3/4″ hand line to battle the active fire in the involved unit. Second due companies were tasked with forcing entry into the adjacent units to check for extension. Due to a quick response and aggressive interior attack the fire was contained to the unit of origin with minor extension into the rear and “D” exposure, limiting damage to the unit involved. Quint 946 assisted with opening up and forcing entry into the adjacent structures.
Once the fire was under control, the scene was turned over to FM 22 for investigation of the scene. Crews assisted the FM with scene preservation and investigation. There were two minor injuries from two subjects illegally living in the garage unit. The fire remains under investigation by the Mantua Township Fire Marshals Office.
