On Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 1759 hours members of the Mantua Township Fire District and Pitman Fire Company No. 1 were dispatched to 111 Mantua Boulevard, Mantua Jewelers, for a reported building fire. Chief 2201 arrived in less than one minute, and reported a 2 1/2 story Taxpayer with nothing showing. Further investigation, found a heavy smoke condition on the interior. Engine Company 2212 responded quickly with a crew of three, and were advised to stretch a single 1 3/4″ hand line upon their arrival.
Engine Company 2212 arrived on scene, secured their own water supply and stretched a hand line to the rear entrance to the kitchen, where they located the seat of the fire, which was quickly knocked down, containing the fire to the stove, cabinets and rear wall, limiting damage to smoke stains throughout. Once the fire was knocked down, crews utilized mechanical ventilation and checked for extension, which revealed negative results. The scene was then turned over to the Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s Office for investigation. Station 28-1 and 13-1 assisted on scene. The fire remains under investigation.
