On Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 1238 hours members of the Pitman Fire Department and Mantua Township Fire District were dispatched to the area of 120 N. Broadway in the Borough of Pitman. While en route Deputy 28-302 arrived and confirmed heavy smoke showing from a three story duplex on N. Oak Avenue. Squad Company 2211 responded immediately with a crew of six personnel. Chief 28-301 arrived, confirmed a working basement fire and commanded Engine Company 2832 to deploy a hand line through the front door and detailed Quint 2816 to perform a search and ventilation. Squad Company 2211 was detailed to deploy a second hand line and assist with extinguishment.
Upon arrival of Squad Company 2211, crews faced heavy fire conditions in the basement and on first floor. While attempting to access the basement, the stairwell gave way trapping a Pitman Firefighter and Firefighter Gill of the MTFD. Both firefighters were quickly extricated, leaving the Pitman Firefighter with a lower leg injury. Members were able to improvise and gain access to the basement, where they were able to quickly extinguish the active fire. Due to heavy fire load and balloon frame construction, the fire traveled to all floors; however, crews were able to contain the active fire to the rear wall limiting damage to the remainder of the residence. Due to high temperatures, command requested four alarms to respond replenishing the exhausted firefighters.
Once the fire was under control, members of the MTFD, stood by on scene assisting with overhaul and investigation, until released by command. The fire currently remains under investigation by the Borough of Pitman Fire Marshal’s Office and Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s Office.
